Virgin Kykkotissa
Byzantine (Cyprus), 16th century.
The most venerated icon of Cyprus is that of the Virgin Kykkotissa. Kykiotissa is derived from the thriving fllora on the mountain Kukkos which is a spieces of loak tree, the golden cyprus oak. The apple of the oak tree is called kikis and was used for tanning and dying. So, Kykiotissa means the Virgin of the Oak Apple.
